| History of OSMusic.Net |
If you were familiar with the old Trax in Space website, then you may be familiar with the old mantra of "Musicians Helping Musicians". Sadly, Trax in Space never realized the full potential of this mantra. Instead, it became a site where musicians would help themselves. They'd help themselves to free bandwidth, free reviews, free promotion, and give nothing back to the site, let alone help out other musicians. When it came down to that, Trax in Space was not worth saving, and in late 2000, Trax in Space finally closed its doors.
Trax in Space is only one of many sites that found out the hard way how difficult it is to stay operational when you give away everything for free. The Novus Manifesto has brought its painful truth to many such sites. TiS, Altered Perception, Home Music, and many others are either completely gone, or just a shell of what it used to be. Even mainstay sites, such as the Mod Archive, Nectarine Radio and the Hornet Archive have learned just how difficult it is to operate just by giving everything away for free.
Enter OSMusic.Net.
In March of 2002, roncli of the now defunct Trax in Space came up with a vision and an idea that would not only tackle the issues of limited bandwidth, but succeed in generating a community of musicians helping musicians, and not just themselves. Armed with the ideas of many former Trax in Space administrators, roncli set out with a mission to build a site based on quality, not quantity. It took nearly two and a half years to get everything together, and in 2004, OSMusic.Net opened its doors to digital musicians.
OSMusic.Net, which stands for "Open Source Music", strives to be the open source music center for the Internet. We have worked hard to create a community that is both easy and fun to use. We wish to give aspiring musicians the resources they need to get better at what they love to do, while at the same time giving other musicians the knowledge that they already have to get started. In fact, many of our Experts are musicians themselves. |
