Cross-Browser Compatibility Dev Blog ![[Dev Blog]](http://www.osmusic.net/images/newstypes/devblog.gif) by roncli Posted: Add your comments
One of the challenges in developing the new version of OSMusic.Net has been cross-browser compatibility. For the most part, I'm going to be supporting IE and FireFox, so I have to make sure things work in both.
Those textboxes I displayed in the last entry were working perfectly in FireFox but not in IE, something I had to fix today. The inbox:
The heights weren't aligning correctly in FireFox, so I had to make some adjustments there.
And the very nature of AJAX itself... calling document vs. ownerDocument in JavaScript, windows.event in IE vs. an event handler in FireFox, and many other little things has made me very cautious about adding client-side script.
That said, there's a lot of client-side script, and a lot of my time is making sure it works right in each browser. It is important to me to be able to get the new site working in at least the major browsers.
A note on the design above, that design is easily interchangable. Once I get someone to make a decent design for the site, I can replace it in one place, unlike the hundreds of changes I'd need to make on the current site. Just about everything is modular, nothing is set in stone, and can be changed in a matter of minutes, if not seconds. This kind of agility will make my life a lot simpler when it comes to adding or changing things. |
Introducing the Dev Blog Dev Blog ![[Dev Blog]](http://www.osmusic.net/images/newstypes/devblog.gif) by roncli On the web: http://www.osmusic.net/news/newstype.asp?NewsTypeID=7 Posted: Add your comments
OSMusic.Net development has never really stopped since launch, so I figured it would be a good idea to keep everyone updated on just what it is I'm working on. The Dev Blog section of the news is dedicated to keeping up on what's going on behind the scenes with OSMusic.Net.
And I have a lot to report about. A few weeks ago, I began upgrading OSMusic.Net to ASP.Net 2.0. Currently, it runs under classic ASP, a decade-old technology that is being slowly phased out by Microsoft. While I have put little bits and pieces about this upgrade on my personal blog, I haven't given any complete updates.
For those in the know, the new OSMusic.Net site will rely heavily on AJAX and JavaScript, and have what some may call a Web 2.0 look and feel. The music section is going to be completely redesigned to allow for smarter navigation between areas, and the general look of the site is going to be updated to lose the boring boxiness that has come with my limited site designing ability in the past.
But looks aren't all that's going to be upgraded, as I will be also adding subtle features to the site to give it a better community feel to it. Things such as having a friends list, a unified favorites list that covers many aspects of the site (much like the Shortcuts are now, only public, and a bit more involved), and the ability to find out more about the users you interact with on a daily basis.
The new site will also give rise to projects, a neat way to be able to express yourself during the creative process. You can work alone or in groups, and your friends will be able to easily track your progress.
I do intend to implement song previews, as well as develop a functional media player with a playlist capability. And it's all going to look great.
As for my current progress, I am in the middle of creating the basic functions that are found in the quick bars to the left. Registration is complete, logging in is nearly done, and the comm station is right around the corner.
Here's a little teaser, and an example of what's on tap. Instead of having clunky reminder boxes as to how to do smilies and special codes, instead you can now click to insert the desired tags.
I'll keep this updated as major parts get done. Oh, and one more thing, as major features get added, such as the music section, I will invite everyone to check out the progress live on the OSMusic.Net beta site. That may not happen for some time, but I am putting that out there to give you something to look forward to. |

Do you have any videos of your DJ set? Or a video of your friends that are dancing at a particular party? Or a short recorded sequence of blasting an ultra strong audio system in your car? Or a little documentary that shows a friendly and mad trip to the Saturday night clubs? Or do you want to show us your home studio where are you creating your last incredible track? Are you a fanatic collector of vinyl and want to show your dungeon where you hide them? Are you a maniac of mobile phone camera recording and you rip everything moving under the kick drums? A new tattoo of your favorite label? Do you like to assemble clips? Well, I suppose you have understood now what kind of material we want for this contest. Go here and upload your video. And of course, enjoy the other playable entries! By the way, this contest could be interesting also to promote yourself, or simply to take a break and to see what is happening in the underground dance music scene.
The winner will receive a copy of HARDCORE MANIA vol.5 and HARDSTYLE MANIA vol.3 including the entire mixed catalogue of our two labels Gunpowder Rec. and Tersikore Rec.
We are still looking for new artists. So if you like our styles and you have some good demos, contact us.

The complete song (70 minutes) has now been released to the public. It of course spans over lots of different styles and movements, and does not make use of any external plugins: just samples and ReNoise's 1,281 built-in effects.
You can download it here (OGG format, 55M .
A call for participants to a forthcoming LTP II has also been issued. ReNoise 1.5 will be used. |

That's right, the charts are a sham!
It is likely we will not have any charts in the near future, simply because that is not the focus of the site, so don't fall prey to jokes about charts at OSM. ![[wink]](http://www.osmusic.net/images/smilies/wink.gif)
quote: OSMusic.Net now has TOP CHARTS!!! Using our state of the art statistics system, we can figure out with 99.9% assurance what the best songs are on the site. Check out the charts page now and see for yourself!!!

First Automated OHC is a Success! Net Watch ![[Net Watch]](http://www.osmusic.net/images/newstypes/netwatch.gif) by TwiTerror On the web: http://ohc.syntesis.org Posted: Add your comments
The first fully automated OHC was a success. Meeting in #TOHC on espernet on October 10th, 7 competors gathered for a small chip compo. Their songs were submitted to an online system, and then congregated into a votepack. Following this, 8 voters sent in their votes to the web interface... result? Excellent! Not only did smh emerge triumphiant from a 1ms vote count, but everything was calculated accurately!
It is hoped that everyone will take advantage of the new system and host their compos online too. The benefits are infinite:
- No more DCC'ing tunes to a host, which makes the whole compo anonymous. - No more counting votes by hand or entering them into a program, votes are calculated automatically. - Pre-Registration is NOT required, and can be done easily at the submission of an entry, or a vote.
Enjoy! |

Uploading Options OSM.net ![[OSM.net]](http://www.osmusic.net/images/newstypes/osmnet.gif) by roncli Posted: Add your comments
OSMusic.Net now has two ways to upload your song! You can upload your song directly off of your hard drive, or you can have OSMusic.Net download the song from another server for you! This was a heavily requested feature in the opening days of OSMusic.Net, especially for those who don't wish to upload their song multiple times.
To add your song the new way, go through the upload process as normal, except on the upload page, follow the link to the new form where you can enter a URL to copy your file to the server. Enjoy! |

Enjoy. ![[smiley]](http://www.osmusic.net/images/smilies/smiley.gif) |
The Audition Room is Now Open OSM.net ![[OSM.net]](http://www.osmusic.net/images/newstypes/osmnet.gif) by roncli Posted: 1 comment
The Audition Room is now open for business! OSMusic.Net's daily competition pits three new songs that have been prerated with a thumbs up against each other to see which song OSMusic.Net users enjoye the most. And the winner gets to come back the next day to face two more challengers and do it all again!
Thumbs up preratings also allow songs to be returned in searches, and not just under your artist name! More visibility means more feedback for your song!
A note on the Audition Room... it is intended to be a daily competition... however, during the opening weeks of OSMusic.Net, there will be times when there are not enough new prerated songs to create a new challenge. In that case, the current competition is extended until there are enough songs to start a new competition.
Good luck to the first participants! |
